Step 2: Run the following commands (type each then hit <enter>)

b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to install it.

The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.

Hi, I'm VERY new to using anything other than Windows. So, even though I did BASIC back in HS 20 years ago, I have no idea what I'm looking at here. I am having a problem with my wireless card.

I read through the entire posting here and just started at the top, I've run the first command list from Mark Rijckenberg at the top and include my results below. I really don't get all of this, but I do like the fact that it all seems to work much faster than the 'other 'W' word I listed above. Thanks in advance for any assistance and the initial education.

When I enter the command "sudo apt-get --purge remove b43-fwcutter" I get
the message that the computer is unable to locate b43-fwcutter. Any ideas?

This should mean that b43-fwcutter is not installed yet on your pc.

Please skip the purge command and proceed with the following commands:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install b43-fwcutter

b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to locate it and install it.

The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.

I performed this and it did something, but when I unplug the LAN cable there
are still no networks recognized under wireless networks. It says there are
239 updates I could install-do you think installing some of these would
help? Maybe it's working and I just need to do something so that the house
wireless network is recognized.

I was in the midst of installing updates and the computer froze, so I turned
it off and started it again. Now it tells me I have to run dpkg --configure
-a to correct this. But when I do that, it says I need superuser privileges.
. . I don't know what to do. Now it seems that my wireless is actually
working, but I still can't quite connect. I may need the modem, because I
think it said something about missing that.
