Why avidemux exist on multiverse?

Asked by WalterCool

Im not a fan of multiverse... like opensource apps.

Multiverse is designed for closed-source apps, avidemux is GPL... so, avidemux dependences MUST be gpl...

So... why is cataloged as multiverse and not universe?

Thanks

multiverse is not for closed source apps, it is for "restricted" universe apps. In the case of avidemux there are various US patents ( the restriction ) on eg h264 decoding that avidemux implements via libx264 that cause it to be placed in multiverse.

gstreamers x264 support is provided by gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse which in turn also depends on libx264.

You seem to be confused about the multiverse repository. Software in multiverse may be GPL, other free software licenses, or closed source. All software in multiverse has some sort of restriction on it, for closed source applications, clearly the source is not available. For the open source applications it may be less obvious - they may need non-free data files, they may implement algorithms that are patented in various legal jurisdictions, or they may be linked to libraries that are restricted in some way.
