having lots of trouble with 11.10. No Avidemux, can't format usb keys, very, very slow

Can you please give the specification of your system. Can you also run:

sudo lshw -C display

And give the output

You can format removable storages if you run:

gksudo gparted

Is there any way to revert to "classic Ubuntu " ? Right now I'm completely underwhelmed by "Unity".
 Can you tell me pls, where are the preferences, Is avidemux still available, is there any reason I can't get the compiz cube to work, why don't any wallpaper changers work ?? I'm so disappointed, I've loved Ubuntu for 6 years now and don't want to go back to an earlier version, but at the moment I can;t see any other way of getting functionality. Classic is now replaced with Unity2D. You could install gnome-panel and/or gnome-shell. Persoannly I advise you install xfce4 and log into the XFCE session, it looks and feels like Gnome2.

The video chip you have is extremely techy about timings and are prone to lockups. The OS is using the right driver but you may want to create an xorg.conf file to define better options and such to get better performance.

 Thanks again, but as to how to install xfce4 you might as well ask me to build a nuclear rector, I have no idea. Could I just re-install 11.04 from the disk to go back? I really don't like 11.10, nothing works properly. It seems that everything I try to install is missing something, I'm thinking if I have to, I'll back up my files and format the hard drive and start again with 11.04. Thanks again Andrew

 Ok guys, I give up, arista won't work, brasero won't work, everything I do just wastes time. I need this computer working, please just tell me how to revert to 11.04. That knowledge would be most welcome.

 PS yes, that was a dummy spit, but at the moment my computer is as useful as a chocolate frying pan.

You'll need to reinstall get get the older release. Remember to archive all the stuff you need
