I am getting error while giving apt-get update. The error is "E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ E: The package lists or status file not be parsed or opened ". give me the solution to solve. I have tried the maximum methods to upgrade the installed packages, whereas nothing has upgraded and removed all the files in /var/lib/apt/lists/ directory too.

If the instructions in the FAQ do not help, please follow the procedure steps 1 to 6 as listed in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure with the only exception that in step 6 you should not create a new question document, but should continue in this current one.

If you remove the files in /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/ and try reloading the repository information, are there new files in /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/ created?

If yes, please provide the contents of one of these files.

If there are no new files, please provide the full output of step 5 of https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure

Doing the commands in step 5 of https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure will usually not solve your problem, but it will provide debug information that helps identifying the cause.

We need all output from the commands in that procedure to be able to help you!
