Unable to update or download from repositories.

Asked by jeff payne

I used maverick for some time and never had a problem with updating or installing new software. I performed 2 back to back upgrades to get to 11.10. Since then I've been mostly unable to install new software or update anything. After many tries and several days of "Hash Sum Mismatch" I managed to install Gnome. I've made no changes to my internal network or my ISP.

The following steps were recommended to aid you in solving this issue:

jeff@Linux1:~$ sudo grep -R proxy /etc/apt/*

If you switch software source in software centre, is it ok?

I forgot to add that. I've tried "Server for United States", "Main Server", Univ. of Oregon and Duke. All have the same problem.

If you disable the multiverse repo, is it ok?

Under "Other Software" I have disabled everything. I get the same errors.

Its not a PPA, it's the multiverse repo you need to disable.

I disabled all but Canonical (using MainServer) and did an apt-get update. The first time I didn't get errors; the second time I got the error below:

W: Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric_main_binary-i386_Packages Hash Sum mismatch

I then tried it 8 more times. 7 failed and 1 succeeded. For some reason the problem is intermittent.

Hi ,
please try these commands and tell if fixed something.
--------------------------------------------------------------
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/*
sudo apt-get autoremove ; sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade --fix-missing
--------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks

Thank you for the suggestion. I was able to run all the commands without an error. However, I'm still unable to update anything. I keep getting an error saying I have an unmet dependency (firefox 14.0.1, but I have 13.0.1). I've tried to upgrade firefox but I always get "hash sum mismatch". Below is the response from the above commands and the attempted upgrade:

jeff@Linux1:~$ sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/*
