Why do I get a really long error message when I try to update?
When I try to update, this is the notification I get afterwards: Could not initialize the package information

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/

There are different problems with the configuration on your system, but there should be a way to solve them:
Open a terminal (Ctrl-alt-t) and issue the follwing commands:
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists
sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists
sudo mkdir /var/lib/
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.
Then try again with
sudo apt-get update
After that select all output (edit - select all) copy it (edit - copy) and paste into a new message of this question thread.

You have to deselect the CD-ROM that you used for installation as a software source for updates.
You have to start Ubuntu software Center and go to "Edit - Software Surces"
CD-ROMs can be listed on the first and second tabs of the dialogue window that is shown. You have to make sure that there is no tick mark besieds the CD-ROm lines. See https:/
Then try the following commands again
sudo rm /var/lib/
sudo apt-get update

You internet connections seems unstable. Apparently some of the files got corrupted during the download.
If there is something that you can do to improve your internet connection, you should do that.
If there is nothing you can do, you have to go through the steps above
sudo rm /var/lib/
sudo apt-get update
again and again, until all package index information has been successfully downloaded.

SOLVED: I just decided to do a fresh install all over again but I removed the lock, installed the keys, and just did a fresh update. Did not mess with anything else. I still think Ubuntu is better than Microsoft. So far, everything seems fine. I'll let you know if anything changes.
