You can install package "gnome-session-fallback" ,it will give you the old classic desktop in Ubuntu 11.10

For details follow below link
http://www.liberiangeek.net/2011/08/return-to-ubuntu-classic-desktop-in-ubuntu-11-10/

you can also install cairo-dock. Go to software center and search cairo dock.
Else below link provides command line syntax

there is no "administration" in version 11.10 under unity.

just click on the black and white ubuntu logo on the left panel and enter whatever app you want in the search box that pops up. e.g. hardware, printer, sound, etc. then click on the app that appears below.

don't install cairo dock with unity. it will screw things up. if you can't use or don't like unity, install the gnome fallback instead.

I did install gnome classic, but how do I fix broken packages, if that is what is making it so slow? We think 2 firefoxs are running at the same time, 3.5 & 7.0, but Im guessing.

Hello Nancy,

You may have to wait a little while, as this is a volunteer support service, and cannot be offered in real time.

To try to answer your question though, it is usually due to browser plugin programs like flash; can you run the following commands in a terminal?

dpkg -l | egrep '(flash|gnash|swf)'
uname -a
lsb_release -a

This will help to identify what flash version (if any) you are running. Usually disabling these plugins improves the responsiveness and stability of browsers, although it will affect many video services, and some more "interactive" websites which use flash (though this is slowly becoming a less common technology).

Also helpful would be to inform us if it is related to a particular website, or service you are using.

Did you run all three commands?

try this instead (perhaps egrep is not part of the default install)

dpkg -l | grep flash
dpkg -l | grep gnash
dpkg -l | grep swf
uname -a
lsb_release -a

remember that you can cut and paste these commands into the terminal.

Hi Nancy,

Just so I am a bit more clear, you need to post back the content from those commands so we can analyse them -- they only query information, they do not perform any other action, so will not on their own fix the problem.

I'm not sure what you mean, plus it is so slow and won't stay up long enough to do anything. When I try to open a terminal window it come up as many as 17 times!! I don't know what's going on. Am I just out of ram?
