Wrong or missing VERSION from apt pipeline

I'm trying to figure out how to use apt-listchanges. Tested on both intrepid and lenny. What's wrong?

$ apt-listchanges --apt

Wrong or missing VERSION from apt pipeline
(is Dpkg::Tools::Options::/usr/bin/apt-listchanges::Version set to 2?)

$ apt-config dump | grep apt-listchanges
DPkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs:: "/usr/bin/apt-listchanges --apt || test $? -ne 10";
DPkg::Tools::Options::/usr/bin/apt-listchanges "";
DPkg::Tools::Options::/usr/bin/apt-listchanges::Version "2";

It seems after running "dpkg-reconfigure apt-listchanges" one can choose which frontend will be used to display changelists when "apt-get upgrade" is run.

--apt is an internal option, don't use it
