Replacing Windows Live Messenger

What is the best free replacement for Windows Live Messenger that can do all the same things? I can't seem to install it under WINE...

The best thing to do, rather than using Wine, is to use a native Linux application.

Unfortunately you do not say what "Windows Live Messenger" is but Google came to the rescue here.

Perhaps "Pidgin Internet Messenger" will do what you want to do. It is already installed in Ubuntu under Applications, Internet.

You can try amsn (is very similar to Windows Live Messenger):

sudo apt-get install amsn

What is your version of Ubuntu ?
The current for 8.04 is aMSN 0.97
