Volume Control

Asked by Nicolas Panozzo

I have Ubuntu 9.1 and I set up the sound and everything was working fine but all of sudden the Volume Control icon has disappeared from the panel and every time I login the volume is muted so I have to unmute it manually all the time.

Do you know how to reset it?

try going to system-preference-startup application scroll down to sound make sure it is checked if not check it then restart .. you could also go to system-preference-sound right click add launcher to panel ,,, this will put the speaker icon back .. one other thing in system-preference -sound if one of the slider bars is too close to 100% it will cause it to mute . i use mine around 80%.. hope this helps

Volume control is correctly checked in Start up Applications but the icon is not showing on the panel.

I am not looking for the Sound Preference icon but only the Volume control icon.

The volume is always muted when I log in although I keep unmuting it.

Is 'notification area' on your panel?
Right click empty space on panel -> add to panel - find in the listing 'notification area'.

Also you could check settings via gconf-editor, such as:
/apps/gnome-power-manager/ui/enable_sound
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/sound
/desktop/gnome/sound/enable_esd
