After all process my Alsa pastebin link is as follows
I've recored in a txt file the results of the step 4 and can post it too if you need, maybe will not be neccesary seeing this pastebin I cannot understand well and dunno how to fix the problem.
My PC is an old P4 with a Premium motherboard (Intel ICH5 integrated sound), but as I told before I switched off by Bios and goes on a PCI C-Media CM8738 as pastebin shows.

Make sure you also run the last command, which is this one:
sudo alsaconf
If there is still no sound in Firefox after that, then run step 4 and step 6 in this procedure:
https:/
Then stop all instances of Firefox, restart one instance of Firefox and retest sound in Youtube.

Yep, first step you included to get alsa 1.0.21 and then alsaconf (i did now again), and found incredible that it detected and configured my C-Media CM8738 but restarting the pc still goes the same. I think is important to mention that even when seems to configure it, my sound configuration preferences shows no hardware, the general control (in the panel) does not increase or decrease volume (manual speakers do, of course) in local mp3 (with songbird) and have no system sounds, showing that my card is not well configured and in some way goes forced on local mp3. A Device Manager I downloaded shows the card too.
I retry again steps 4 and 6, taking care of stop all firefox windows, as I remember I didn't do it last time in order of restart showing the procedure page, but still the same. Grrr.

As i see now i haven't switched off by bios the integrated sound card (intel ich5) the first time, as i did in second already, cos I readed in ALSA-DOCS this card wasn't compatible and thought having the two ones on could be the problem. I'm sorry the whole all other info does not tell much for a neeby like me.

Try testing sound in Youtube while ONLY having the onboard audio enabled and PCI card disabled/removed.
Also test sound in Youtube while ONLY having the PCI audio enabled and on-board hda-intel audio disabled in the BIOS.
Try both these configurations, where only 1 soundcard is active.

Of course, first case:
1.I switched off the PC and take out the PCI C-Media of the slot
2.I start and enable Intel integrated in the BIOS
3.I make 4 and 6 steps of procedure
4.Restart te machine
5.Try in a youtube, no sound

This is a very simple fix, and it might just work: reboot your
computer, and then do sudo alsa force-reload. Tell us what you get out
of this one :)

Hi ppl I've find a trick to make run videos from youtube, etc. using mplayer from his ubication on /tmp just making the video run in mozilla (pausing while he dowload) and open a terminal
~$ mplayer $(ls -tr /tmp/Flash* | tail -1)
with this the window opened in mplayer shows the last video dowloaded in his temporal directory and shows using local audio. Is just a patch as we still have no system sound and card does not appear on sound-configs but solve my problem just making an script. Did I need to report the bug to let team find a solution on C-MEDIA drivers?

That is a great workaround and plays flash movies. I have a few variations.

1) Start playing video on youtube
2) Keep window open while video loads
3) In parallel to the video loading, run one of these command
$ mplayer $(ls -tr /tmp/Flash* | tail -1)
$ vlc $(ls -tr /tmp/Flash* | tail -1)
$ xine $(ls -tr /tmp/Flash* | tail -1)
Move to desktop: $ cp $(ls -tr /tmp/Flash* | tail -1) ~/Desktop
These go well as aliases in .bashrc

Getting back to the issue.
So if I understand correctly. You have audio in every application but firefox and system sounds. Can you take a look at the Applications tab in Sound preferences to make sure that the volume is not low or muted (I doubt this is the issue).
Since you have made many changes (such as installing alsa from source,) I would recommend the simplest most basic testing.
1) Without installing Ubuntu again on your system, boot from a 32-bit LiveCD (I would test both 9.10 and 9.04)
2) Install the flashplugin-nonfree package
3) Open firefox
4) Watch a youtube video - is there sound?

@miloren: I think that your output from step 4 from the sound troubleshooting procedure is showing the issue:
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: root 2055 F...m arecord
/dev/snd/timer: root 2055 f.... arecord
I suspect that a certain program is using root privileges to spawn the arecord process. This arecord process is hogging access to your /dev/snd sound devices and is probably preventing your sound card from working correctly.
You can try the following command to kill the arecord process:
sudo pkill arecord
Then try the following command to restart ALSA:
sudo alsa force-reload
Then retest sound output.

Very very thnx David and Mark and all of you.
First ting was so succesfully, playing both live-cd's 9.04 and 9.10 we have full audio, system sounds and swf's from youtube installing the plugin. This shows CMEDIA card works ok when integrated sound card is disabled and i think is the way to continue.
But after reboot in installed version to make second thing, after kill all arecord and reload alsa stills the same, no system no swf's. Card still seems to be not detected.
I'm really annoyed if I forget some easy thing but I revise all every step, in sound preferences, multimedia selector and alsa mixer and all seems to be ok, and no problem on mp3 or swf's played local except that the volume of the panel does not work. May I have to re-install, seeing first step result, but I have to be sure than I clean all sound preferences (good or bad) before it or maybe new installation reproduce the problem.
I'm going to replay live 9.04 cd and watch and write the sound configuration obtained just to search for something interesting.

In my limited point of view I see shorter way make a reinstall, maybe from a previous kernel in old 9.04 or less where I can find the sound card ok. If the Live CD works, then it is a configuration issue. Without fussing
around too much you can test the "Guest Session" user from the fast user

A) Try the following:
$ mkdir ~/pulse-backup && cp -r ~/.pulse ~/.asound* /etc/asound.conf /etc/pulse -t ~/pulse-backup/
$ rm -r ~/.pulse ~/.asound*
$ sudo rm /etc/asound.conf
Then reboot.
B) Create a new user, migrate your files (except .asound* and .pulse*)
and change the permissions to the new user. If not read below.
If you do decide to reinstall and you have data on you machine, back up
/home (including all the *invisible* .files and .folders in your home
directory) onto external media. Safe to have a backup in case something
happens. I would then follow the instructions set in the solution[1] for
reinstalling while preserving /home (which will keep your settings and
files but will reset all the programs back to the standard CD set of
packages). This will allow you to test/understand that it was a problem
with an application or possibly a program that you compiled from source
that may have affected your system.

As new user have not audio too, I made a reinstall preserving /home but I still have the same problem in the default user, but in this new version a new user have sound ok. Then I decided finally reinstall again without preserving /home, formating ext3, instead any other config. options move, as I consider it quicker, and after some minor problems with the grub and others it is ok now.
Thnx very very much to all of you, there was moments when I really though my C-MEDIA card does not work, now it shows detected and working fine.
