No sound Compaq Presario CQ40-108TU Notebook pc

I'm new to ubuntu 8.04,i have my laptop compaq presario cq40-108tu...it work very well in vista,but i have decided to shift to ubuntu open source...i don't know how to configure my sound settings,i tried to use headphone out put but all i can hear is continuous messy sound,i think i'm having problem in sound driver...please help me to configure...thank in advance

I have upgraded my alsa,and my sound is now working,my mike is not working yet but i think i'm just having my problem in my old microphone.....thanks a lot!!!!!
