Codec: IDT 92HD75B2X5 - STAC92xx Analog codec not working through speakers on HP Mini 1000 in Ubuntu 9.04 alpha (UNR-Jaunty image)
Total newbie here to the Linux/Ubuntu experience (long time Mac OS X user). I've managed so far to build the USB image of the latest Jaunty build and install over Windows XP. There is a lot of learning curve here but I'm unable to determine how to get sound/audio to work through the built-in speakers on my HP Mini 1000. The controls for sound are turned on (no Mute or speakers turned off). I'm assuming this is likely a driver issue but wondering how I diagnose it and then resolve it. The sound out/mini-jack is working fine.
What commands in Terminal do I use to check audio drivers and configuration? Is there a system level application for testing audio and fixing it but doing a patch or download with install/test? Is the HP hardware or the audio chipset/drivers a known issue with UNR? Does Ubuntu have a system check application for determining compatibility issues?

Hi,
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your sound card, please first follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Terminal"
Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)
sudo aptitude install hwinfo
hwinfo --sound
aplay -l
cat /dev/sndstat
lspci -nn
lsmod | grep snd
cat /proc/asound/
grep audio /etc/group
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread
Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if possible) on this thread

You should add the following string to the /etc/modprobe.
options snd-hda-intel model=YOUR_MODEL
Valid model names (that replace YOUR_MODEL) depending on the codec chip, can be found at
If you do not know your codec chip name, you can execute the following Terminal command to find out:
cat /proc/asound/
Make sure to set all channels to high volume levels in alsamixer EXCEPT for "external amplifier".
If the output of the command
grep audio /etc/group
looks like this:
audio:x:81
or like this:
audio:x:81:pulse
Then replace that audio line with something like this:
audio:x:81:<your login name>
where <your login name> is the username you use to log into Ubuntu

Sound and audio hardware profile results for my HP Mini 1000 with Atom Processor - this is the standard off the shelf model that came pre-installed with Windows XP Home Edition (no other hardware accessories or modications) - running strictly from the hard drive (60 GB) - 2 GB of RAM
If sound support is currently problematic for newbies from vendor to vendor then why not build a self-running version of this set of terminal commands that Ubuntu runs at start-up and then notifies both user and Ubuntu of the issue?

Please try this procedure:
1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
2. and add these lines to the end of the file:
# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard

OK,
The first solution above you suggested didn't work but it didn't break anything either. Headphone jack out still works so I can hear music/sound but no luck on the built-in speakers for my HP Mini 1000 (Atom processor). Is there a specific HP bios or sound driver? I don't see any HP configuration listed in your note. I appreciate the support though. I'm surprised that sound is a problem given that HP ships a version of Ubuntu (modified and locked down) as their HP Mini 1000 MI series (mobile internet).

Total Linux newbie here as well.
I've been following this thread because I believe Scott and I have the exact same situation.
Mark, I'm not sure if Kaffaman's solution works because he loses me (remember big time newbie) at the first step.
When he says download and compile, how do I compile? I've got three 1.0.19 files sitting on my desktop. He adds that bit about ./configure, but I've no idea how to get to through that step. When it comes to Macs, I've got this stuff down pat. Linux is another story though.

Good, I'm not alone but I want to make this work so we can show others the answer and maybe even get a more complete release for the next update of UNR-Jaunty. I really think the combination of UNR and the HP Mini 1000 are very promising. Since I'm not a programmer, I don't typically do makes/builds or compiles to get a working system. However, in this case, the support here has been very polite and tolerate of the skill level of the users.
So, how do we unpack/uncompress and then install the updated drivers? Then once they're installed, how do we test?
Is there any reason not to have vendor specific branches on this site? Or is sound the only exception from configuration to configuration?

Well. I've managed to teach myself how to compile the three files. The problem is, it didn't work.
Either way, here's how I did it Scott.
download those three files.
Navigate to the directory they're located via terminal, and enter:
tar -jxvf alsa-driver-
Do the same for the other two
Now in that same directory you have three new directories for each of the three compiles we've done.
This is when I began doing what Kaffaman said to do.
navigate into the driver directory and enter the command he says:
./configure --with-
(I added the sudo, as Mark said to)
Then navigate to the the other two compiled directories and enter:
./configure && make && sudo make install
Well. That's how you do it. Unfortunately, my sound is still not working...

Sorry that I cannot help you any further.
I suggest using the previous model line then:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
and change the model options to the following:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1
All I can suggest is trying that one or one of the other model options, until you find one where the speakers and headphones both work.

From a newbie standpoint, Ubuntu (Linux) is not a consumer product just yet but the support here is definitely very good and very helpful. I wish HP would support this site with some additional testing and scripts.
One other comment but the original UNR-Jaunty site recommended using FLASHNUL to build a boot USB device. No offense but someone should re-package in English and not Russian and provide some minimal QA testing.
Next up - how to install and run the latest Java Runtime Environment.

Here is what the ALSA file should look like for the HP Mini 1000 if you've performed the build/update/make as Mark previously replied. Did the trick for me. As we both know, Ubuntu needs to make this completely automated for the consumer market to take off. The amount of time wasted to make something work is very expensive even for the team here.
I find it amusing that the base sound system is shown as dell and msi I guess the target ATOM platform with the Intel chipset is the same for HP which isn't surprising but not exactly user friendly from a documentation standpoint.
Next up; trying to install and run Sun's latest Java Runtime Environment.
Let me know if you get your sound back. Haven't tested microphones yet though.

Ubuntu is starting to make Windows look stable by comparison. I really wish it weren't the case but right now, I'm spending WAY too much time trying to get productive with UNR. There is no such thing as free software; cost of ownership is real.
I hope that someone at Ubuntu is monitoring/
At this point, I'm moving on to the next challenge: plug-ins. JRE is running now but by pure luck on my part. Still don't have the plug-in configured yet.

Did you need to uninstall alsa-driver, lib and base by the package manager before compiling and installing these?

I have the same problem on a Gateway P-6831FX. I installed 1.0.19 ALSA and tried several different possible combinations of model, but none worked. The sound chip identifies specifically as IDT 92HD71B8X if that matters at all and it worked perfectly under Hardy and Intrepid.

1. Install Ubuntu 8.10 from a LiveCD session or from a LiveUSB session (via bootable USB stick) onto the harddisk of the HP Mini 1000. Avoid a WUBI install. Do an install into a separate partition, so that you have a dual-boot environment.
2. After boot into Ubuntu 8.10, copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
3. and add these lines to the end of the file:
# Keep snd-pcsp from beeing loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1

I've had no problems with either UNR 8.04 or the full i386 desktop install of 8.10 (speakers work right out of the box), it's the nightly builds and the current UNR beta that I end up have to compile alsa 1.0.19 from source and editing alsa-base.conf. I'm currently running the beta and once the speakers were enabled (by the method you listed) I've had no problems. I'm impressed, the beta is very stable.

I've been away but I'm currently without any sound through the built-in speakers or the sound out headphone jack on my HP Mini 1000. The cost of ownership for using UNR is simply too high for my needs at this time; if I had more time to learn more about configuring the system, my pain/tolerance level might be higher but it isn't. I bought a netbook to be productive, not to create a support time sink despite the kind and polite efforts of this support forum.
I might wipe the disk clean later and start over but not right now. It would be useful if UNR had self-correcting diagnostics for hardware/driver issues such as these. I can't believe how much time I've wasted on this small issue but apparently I'm not alone. The myth of open source as being cheaper is just that; a myth. I would be happy to pay for a consumer quality release from Ubuntu. Maybe there is such a thing and I'm not aware of it.
I might just switch to Google's Android if they build a netbook version that supports larger screens like this one on my HP Mini 1000.

You can read the entire thread before you start assuming you know what's going on or have all the information about what I have tried already, what worked for awhile and what broke it. Unless I'm mistaken, I was told by experienced users to install the UNR - Jaunty image for my hardware. I'm fully aware the product is not ready for consumers like myself but my feedback is no less relevant or valid especially since it's beta (while surprisingly, HP ships a working version of Ubuntu for their Mini 1000 hardware today albeit with a locked down GUI).

The real trick is the alsaconf app - its great - everytime I run it, it worked perfectly. It configured everything for me just fine. Again I still have no mic - I don't know how to get that but at least I'm closer. I also suggest the alsamixer app for gnome - its been helpful for me.
If anyone figures this out let me know :)

I tried updating ALSA to 1.0.19 with no joy. It's worth noting I'm using an ordinary laptop (Gateway P-6831FX) with the regular x86-64 version of Jaunty updated from the Alternate x86-64 version of Intrepid. I'm using a similar sound chip, however, which recognizes as IDT 92HD71B8X.

Well this thread solved my problems (HP Pavilion 3550ez). I just added the following lines to the end of /etc/modprobe.

Run alsamixer
Unmute all the outputs by hitting “m”
Hit tab to go the capture settings
Highlight the “Mic” setting using the arrow keys.
Hit space to enable the microphone.
Highlight the “Capture” setting using the arrow keys.
----> (the crucial part for me) Hit space to enable capture (note that just because you have volume bar
here doesn’t mean it is enabled).
Hit escape.

I also downloaded package alsaguimixer and raised the levels for both master & capture to maximum by use of the upward arror key. BTW don't understand the use of the padlock: unlocking/locking them doesn't seem to do anything. Another possibility after doing the above is to uncheck skype's option of itself setting mixer levels. After doing all above. playback of sound is great but recording/capturing could be better.

Well I've been following this threat from a long time now.
I couldn't put to work my mic in my mini 1020 so i tried a different option and i would like the guys from launchpad or anyone who can, help me to do it.
I installed the HP MIE OS to my laptop just to check if the sound as the mic and everything else is working. For my surprise, yes it is, everything is working great.
But i don't want to keep this OS in my laptop, i want Ubuntu 9.04. My idea is to check what is making work the sound and the mic in this OS, maybe looking the ALSA configuration, checking the driver version, and everything else that help us to figure it out whats happening with sound in Ubuntu 9.04.
Can any of you PRO guys from Ubuntu help me with this goal and tell me what i have to do, so together can make this work?
PD: Sorry for my English but born language is Spanish =)
