No sound on Dual-boot, Pentium 4 system
A friend set me up with dual-boot Windows XP/Ubuntu but I'm gravitating to the latter for all the headaches with Windows.
I tried listening to a midi file and get no sound. Totem Movie Player loads, lots of pretty graphics, sound slider is full, not muted. (I can't seem to find my system hardware info in Ubuntu.) Also when I visit Youtube it always says "Video not available."

Please open a terminal (ctrl+alt+t) and paste this command

I ran your command, a lot happened but no, the sound still isn't there. My headphones do work on the WinXP side so i'm sure it's not hardware, more likely a configuration/

Don't have sound at all ?
Open a terminal and give this command

alsamixer

Try to see if something is muted [MM]. If it is then un-mute with "m" key. You can navigate with arrow keys (right-left) and volume up-down with arrow keys (up-down). Exit with "Esc".

Please bear with me because I have NO IDEA what you're talking about. Just turning on a linux computer presumes a much more knowledgeable person than you're talking to here. I don't know how to save script of packages run. I visited the alsa page, saved and opened the file which is lots of text, no clue how to run it.
My computer is a Gateway (model unknown) Pentium 4, 2.4Ghz ACPI multi-processor with 1.23GB of ram.

Your issue is with sound, so the CPU and RAM are of zero value to the question.
Copy the command I gave and press cTRL+ALT+T
Paste the command to the terminal and hit ENTER
Select to upload to the server and a URL willbe made, copy the URL and paste it here as an update.

Yes i visited the page and saw that info but ran another script that said Ubuntu 10/Maverick is no longer supported? I don't know how to give it sound, even after reading the above. I'm not a programmer and it could take me a while to pick up on this stuff.

I apologize for the hiatus. I was a bit overwhelmed with the instructions you gave me given my inexperience. Then tonight Ubuntu gave me the option to upgrade to 11.1 which I did (no reconfigs or partition changes on my part needed.) Anyway still no sound. Wow. You solved it. Yes I was using a separate sound-card because when i set up the computer with XP the motherboard port didn't work at the time for who-knows-why. I switched to the motherboard sound port using Ubuntu and there was sound. THANK YOU!
