built-ins don't stop when i'm using external speaker.

Asked by joshua adkins

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 -bit on an Asus K52F. I cannot get the sound to run only from my external speaker (an Omnitech mini speaker) when it is plugged in. no matter what I do, the built-in speakers just keep playing. I won't be surprised if it is a simple fix. I haven't been regularly using Ubuntu that long. I only recently figured out my internet runs better with Ubuntu than with Windows (don't ask me why, my computer is weirdly temperamental). Any help is appreciated.

I had a similar problem on my desktop. Click on the speaker icon in the top-right corner of your screen. Go to sound preferences in the drop down. When the settings loads up, go over to the tab called Output. If there are multiple device options, click on one of the others.

You may also be able to mute your speakers manually with the "Windows" and "F#" keys, which ever shortcut is standard on your laptop.
