gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
add line:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-vostro enable=1 index=0

If you are using Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), then execute this command and reboot:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/
After rebooting, retest sound output using headphones and speakers.
