sound preferences takes long (never) to respond

Asked by JOB

Hi,

Recently I had a problem with my sound in Ubuntu but now I have solved it thanks to someone here in launchpad. Before the problem was solved, I did install a sound card, after which whenever I try to change the volume preferences, a notification would say 'waiting for system to respond', which it never does. The sound works now after adding a line in some file, but the volume preferences still won't show up. What is the problem?
