Driver version:
Library version: 1.0.24.1
Utilities version: 1.0.24.2

You have no ALSA driver version, that means it's missing. Try:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install alsa-base alsa-utils

May help

Presuming that ALSA (advanced Linux sound architecture) is installed; click the little speaker at the top of the screen. Be sure audio is not muted. Not muted and no audio? Click sound preferences from the same drop-down. a gui will open. start with the hardware tab. check the various profiles, testing the speakers each time. On my machine the "analog stereo duplex" must be selected. yours might be different. Input and output tabs allow you to select various in and outs once the hardware is set, these will vary depending on the PC. If alsa has been installed it seems either your audio is completely muted, or your hardware needs to be reconfigured.

I can't see anything under the hardware tab. It says "choose a device to configure", but there is no device listed. In the output tab, I see "dummy output stereo" and its checked. I can't see anything in the input tab also...

Open synaptic package manager. Check alsa-base and alsa-utils if these aren't checked they are not installed. If they are checked mark the packages for re-installation you might also check and install any alsa packages that have "backports" as well

Open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Please provide outputs:
cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/info
cat /proc/asound/modules

Update your system and load modules.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get -f install

sudo apt-get install module-assistant

sudo module-assistant auto-install alsa
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/natty/en/man8/module-assistant.8.html

Install a GUI to configure sound.
sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer

The outputs are:
bahar@bahar:~$ cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/info
cat: /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/info: No such file or directory
bahar@bahar:~$ cat /proc/asound/modules
cat: /proc/asound/modules: No such file or directory

When I trey "sudo apt-get install module assistant, after the output "Extracting the package tarball, /usr/src/alsa-driver.tar.bz2, please wait..."
I get an error message in the middle of "Building alsa source-step 1"
It says:
module-assistant, interactive mode ├─────────────┐
│ Build of the package alsa-source failed! How do you wish to │
       │ proceed? │
       │ │
│ VIEW Examine the build log file │
│ CONTINUE Skip and continue with the next operation │
│ STOP Stop processing the build commands

I chose "VIEW Examine the build log file"
I got a very long result (I saved it and tried to post it here but I couldn't, I keep getting "timeout error", maybe its too long. I can try again later if it is necessary)
After that I chose "CONTINUE Skip and continue with the next operation" and I got the output:
"/usr/share/modass/packages/default.sh" build KVERS=2.6.38-8-generic KSRC=/usr/src/linux KDREV=2.6.38-8.42 kdist_image

Thanks, and I hope this helps...

Use pastebin for log file and post link here.
http://pastebin.ca/

Try this.
sudo alsa reload
sudo reboot

If that doesn't help.
sudo alsa force-reload
sudo reboot

Update database:
sudo updatedb

Please post output:
locate pci_ids.h

## It should display this.
/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8/include/linux/pci_ids.h
/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic/include/linux/pci_ids.h

Lets get on the other side of the medal.
Please open sources.list:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

> W: Failed to fetch cdrom://Ubuntu-Netbook 10.10 _Maverick Meerkat_ - Release i386

Comment all lines regarding Maverick CD, probably the first four lines. This is to get rid of outputs stating 'failed to fetch blabla'.
Save the file.
Update the system.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get -f install

Please post output:
dpkg -l alsa*

I try to reinstall them but nothing happens. When I try from terminal, I get this:
bahar@bahar:~$ sudo apt-get install alsa-base
[sudo] password for bahar:
Reading package lists... Done

Reading state information... Done
alsa-base is already the newest version.

alsa-utils is already the newest version.

bahar@bahar:~$ dpkg -l alsa*
No packages found matching alsa-info.sh.
No packages found matching alsa_setup.sh.

Also I never get "kernel drivers in use" output for audio device. It seems they are not installed.

Thanks again...

I think your upgrade either didn't complete, or you are missing dependencies for some reason.
Open synaptic package manager & type alsa in the rebuilding search box. Scroll thru the result. mark all previously installed packages containing "alsa" or "asound" for re- installation, and be sure ALL of the following are installed. If not mark then for installation:

linux-sound-base
alsaplayer-common
        libasound2-dev #if you have 32 bit arch.
        lib64asound2-dev #if you have 64 bit arch.
alsa-tools
gstreamer0.10-alsa
bse-alsa
alsa-tools-gui
alsa-utils
alsaplayer-alsa
alsa-base

If you still have problems it might be a bug, in which case you would need to file a bug report.

That solved my problem!
I reinstalled all of them and apparently I was missing bse-alsa and alsa-tools-gui.
Now everything works fine.
Thanks a lot...

I have the exact problem, however the above suggestions don't help. I ran 10.10 just fine, but the upgrade to 11.04 yields no recognition of my soundcard. If I were to provide output, would anyone be willing to assist, if possible?

I'm presently in the same situation as Baharmuratoglu (and had high hopes that what helped him would help me). In my sound preferences applet under output, there's nothing listed in "Choose a device to configure"... same for input.

While I have everything installed, it's highly likely it's not configured properly. I can typically sort these things out pretty quickly myself, but I'm really stuck here (for about a week now).

Before I belch terminal output from the alsa script here, I would like to confirm that this thread is still on the radar... or should I create a new thread?

Many thanks!
Phil

Someone suggested me this, maybe it will help you:

Open a terminal and run alsamixer, then unmute the spdif

I didn't try this because my problem was already solved. So I don't know if it will help or not, but you can try...

Thank you, Baharmuratoglu... I'm burning the 11.04 ISO and will simply reinstall the entire thing.

The alsamixer mute wasn't an issue... my audio hardware simply isn't being recognized and I've done 1000 things to this configuration, which is probably making things worse.

Fresh install might help. We'll see.

Many thanks for the suggestion though! ;-)

I also have the same problem.

My system is using Intel sound card.
Upgraded from 10.04 to 11.04 over the internet.

Sound stopped working.

I have dual boot, ubuntu 10.04 dna 11.04 now. Sound works fine in 10.04.

In 11.04, if I am on Skype call with someone, I play some music the person on the skype call receives my sound.

Any clues on how to fix this ?
