Cannot access sound controls

Asked by Alex Riggle

Ubuntu 10.04

I need to set microphone level in order to use Simon (a voice recognition program). Simon says (heh) to do that from my system's sound control app.

When I go to System>Preferences>Sound it hangs and says "Waiting for sound system to respond". Indefinitely.

I just uninstalled PulseAudio today to attempt to make it play sounds from 2 different programs simultaneously. Everything still makes noise. But I still can't make it play sound from more than one source at a time.

Do I need to reinstall PulseAudio? Install something else? And, is there any way on God's Green Earth to get it to play sounds from two different sources at the same time?

Help?

It would make sense to try reinstalling pulseaudio, to see if that enables you to configure your sound properties.

I'm calling this a comment rather than an answer, because it only answers half your question. My Ubuntu 10.10 system has no problem playing two (or even more) sounds at a time (and it has pulseaudio installed), so there is a way...but I'm not sure what it is. Note that you might get better results if you asked that as a separate question. If someone knows the answer, and they see the title of this question, they won't know that you're looking for that information too.

Pulse is installed by default. Why did you have to install it separately?

@actionparsnip: It was installed (by default) on his system. He *uninstalled* it himself, in an attempt to fix a problem where he cannot play multiple sounds concurrently.

I'll reinstall it and see what happens.

Okay, I reinstalled PulseAudio and can get to my audio controls! Yay! But I still can't get a speaker button to appear on my panel, and still can't hear two sounds at once. I think I'll close this and open another on the two sounds problem.
