Soundcard not detected

Asked by Paul Quirk

Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
I was attempting to install a driver in my Compaq Presario C700 to get the fax modem working, Ubuntu updated, then the sound stopped working. If I boot to a previous version in grub, sound works fine. Fax still not working. What went wrong?

Judging from the output of the debugging information provided, it looks like the fax/modem driver overwrote the existing Ubuntu sound drivers, which is...bad.

I decided to pray to the upgrade gods and upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, and the sound works again. Moreover, the mail notification in Evolution started working again. Faxing still doesn't work. Attempting new prayers to the fax gods.
