Codec: Conexant CX20551 (Waikiki) - card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog] Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) - no sound output on Toshiba Satellite p100 PSPA6A-20817 Laptop in Ubuntu 10.10

Asked by Max Hay

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a Toshiba Satellite p100 PSPA6A-20817 Laptop and have absolutely no sound, either from speakers or headphones. All other systems work perfect. I also receive a message on boot up saying - modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory. But system loads fine.

Don't know if this is related to the no sound issue.

Have checked sound preferences all at full volume. Have rebooted several times. No change.

Have copied the following information from step 3&4 of your procedures.

Please provide step by step instructions as not that flash on computers. Thanks in advance.

You can disable ACPI in the kernel or use the patch, your call

Hi Max,

You may be experiencing the following old bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/136469

http://www.linlap.com/wiki/Toshiba+Satellite+P105

So you can try two things to try to fix the sound issue:

1. upgrade your BIOS to a version higher than v3.80
2. boot with acpi=off kernel option

# Open a terminal and enter the following command:

gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

# in the line looking something like that:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-3-amd64 root=/dev/sda1 ro noapic

# you can add "acpi=off" at the end of the line so that it looks like this:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-3-amd64 root=/dev/sda1 ro acpi=off noapic

Hope it will work. I can't test it.

Reboot your pc and then retest sound.

If sound is still not working, you can get the latest BIOS update (ACPI Flash BIOS version 4.70 for Satellite P100/P105) for your laptop here:

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/outFrm.jsp?ofId=AskIris&searchString=P100+BIOS&x=0&y=0

Click on the link that says:

ACPI Flash BIOS version 4.70 for Satellite P100/P105

You will need to make a boot floppy and put the BIOS update file on it, boot from the floppy disk and flash your BIOS.

Regards,

Mark

Sorry actionparsnip I didn't know where to go in the links you gave me. the following links inside stated pages could not be found.

Mark - I have entered gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst into terminal but the menu list is empty no lines stating;
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-3-amd64 root=/dev/sda1 ro noapic

Would I need to enter a tab in this menu or should it be sitting there after entering first line into terminal

Sorry guys very green when it comes to computers.

you need to run:

gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Find this line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

and change it to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off noapic"

Save the new file and close gedit, then run:

sudo update-grub

Reboot to test

Thank you Mark I have sound at last, you are a legend now i can start enjoying the land of Ubuntu.

The error message also disappeared on boot up - great job.

Just a quick couple of questions. What does turning off the apci do to the computer? and what do I need to download to see the thermal readings of my computer, as i have found it runs quite hot.

Thanks again Mark and thanks to all who have replied to my sound issue.

It stops the system from using Advanced Configuration and Power Interfaces and will not report your battery level. You may also find the CPU always runs at 100% speed, reducing battery time

Yeah thanks actionparsnips, it was actually your grub instruction that got my sound working sorry didn't read the name correctly. Thanks heaps.

All problems solved thanks again. Hopefully having the CPU running at 100% won't cause further issues down the line and doesn't cause overheating issues. I never had a big battery life anyway so I am always plugged in.
