have advertisements come up

Asked by Susan

Not that I want these to come up automatically-advertisements-but I am having trouble with some web sites that I am not able to look at? So I thought that it might be pop up blockers? When I checked it it was not checked off --- meaning that my pop up blockers were turned off? right? Well also I always get the gray media player on all advertisements, not that it is a bad thing but it may be hindering some of those sites.

Usually when a pop-up is blocked, there is a message at the top of the screen which says that "a pop-up has been blocked" and it gives you an option to look at the pop-up anyway.

As for the gray media player, this is probably because you are missing some media drivers. You could try this:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

which installs the most common media drivers on your machine.

Thank you -- I tried the sudo apt-- but it comes up with a message saying that it couldn't find package? how else can I install media drivers?

Are you using 8.10? Then you should have ubuntu-restricted-extras. Maybe you made a typing error. See also this page here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

which contains instructions on how to get the players.

If you cannot see certain media, this could also be because you are missing a flash player. To get a flash player, open synaptic (System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager) and search for "flash" or "flash player".

If you need further help, please tell me your Ubuntu version and if you have the 32 bit or 64 bit version.

I believe I have 8.10, but when I look at the S.P.M it says firefox 3.0? and as per the 32 bit or the 64 bit version --- where might I find that info?
I have also tried to search for the "flash player" but in my S.P.M It is not in there, I have a flashplugin-nonfree that is already selected.

To check your Ubuntu version:

lsb_release -a

The "Release" number is your Ubuntu version.

To check 32-bit versus 64-bit:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

This will give you your processor model - you can then look it up or post it here to find out if it's 32-bit or 64-bit (chances are it's probably 32-bit).

Relating to your initial question: you can see which sites are blocked by firefox in Tools > Options > Content > Block Pop-Up Windows (and you can set Exceptions for sites you want to always allow). As for the Flash Player, you can get it straight from the Adobe site: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/

Hope that helps! :)

Thank you I checked it out and my processor says "0", but the clflush size says "64".(same thing?)

And as for the flash player I have tried that and the web sites that I have on the exception list still come up with the gray media play symbol---and that is what I want to get rid of. I want to have them just come on automatically when I go to a site. as I think that is my problem why I can't view and be on sites.
Oh I have the flash player already--so ????

For 64 bit vs 32 bit: type into a terminal:

uname -a

and you will see either x86_64 (64bit) or i386 (32bit).

As for the media player, please give us some examples of a site. Some videos use flash player and others use different players, e.g. there is also an mplayer plugin for firefox for which you might miss some codecs.
So to test: can you play YouTube videos? YouTube is using Flash Player.

And try this again:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

it could be that there was a temporary problem. The package should be there and install most of the important codecs.

This is what it says:

sue@sue-desktop:~$ uname -a
Linux sue-desktop 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 00:13:11 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
sue@sue-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
[sudo] password for sue:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
ubuntu-restricted-extras is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-2.6.24-19-generic linux-headers-2.6.24-19
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
sue@sue-desktop:~$

Some examples are the Tim Horton's web site--- when I try to enter for the "contest" it brings down a red screen over top of the calendar of choices-with a 0 (zero) in the middle of it? So if I click on the box to get rid of it, it does nothing.

Aha, then you have "ubuntu-restricted-extras" already installed, so you should have most codecs already. You also have flash player already installed if you can see YouTube. Let me look at the Tim Horton site...

And i686 means that you have 32 bit. That means your software is 32 bit, I don't know your processor, so it could still be that your processor is capable of 64 bit.

As for the Tim Hortons site, this seems to be using flash (right click on the area and you see some options for "Flash Player 10". It seems to work for me even though I didn't enter my address fully. Don't know why it's not working for you, you could try some other browser, other options would be

sudo apt-get install epiphany-browser

or

sudo apt-get install opera

They sometimes work better than firefox at specific sites, it's good to have 2 browsers in case something like that happens.

Btw, one more thing. Some of these sites require java. This should be installed already but you need to enable it in your browser (very often disabled by default). In firefox, go to

Edit->Preferences->Content and check the tab "enable java".

This is what it says for the Tim Horton's contest---so how do I get rid of the block?
<div style="height: 779px; width: 1235px; display: block;" id="filter">
<!--puts a layer over the entire site to dim it out when the game is being played-->
            </div>

Do you have the firefox-extension "Adblock". If so, you could try to disable it and go to the Tim Horton site again. As I said before, you could also try to use epiphany-browser or opera and see if the problem persists.

Other than that, I don't really know what the problem is, maybe contact the Tim Horton site administrator.

Can you help with this problem?
