adobe flash problems

just needed to add that my media player consistently have problems showing some videos/movies ... Is this something else?

In Firefox install the plugin called flash-aid. It will remove any conflicting flash code and install the correct one for your system, and will keep it updated. Just follow the prompts when you run it and select the defaults.

The problem with media player is something different, probably some missing codecs which can't be installed with Ubuntu because they are not open source. You will need to install the restricted-extras package and it should work fine.

the adobe flash player is kaput ... help!

What do you mean by kaput?

it just does not show anything ... used to work when called on while surfing and reading ... now ... they just show a blank white background, same as the rest of the site page I am on ... or else, they are blank black boxes ... while there are messages saying that I need to download and install Adobe player ... nothing works ...
they used to work perfectly and I have not installed anything into my computer except for updates when they come up

Can you open a terminal and paste me the output of:

dpkg -l |grep flash

If you want your problems to go away permanently, I would suggest removing the flashplugin-installer package (it's just a wrapper package) and downloading the real adobe-flashplugin package from the Canonical Partner Repository instead.

You will first need to purge the old package:

sudo dpkg --purge flashplugin-installer

Then enable the Partner Repo in Software Center if you haven't already:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu#Adding_Canonical_Partner_Repositories

The install:

adobe-flashplugin

You can do this from Software Center or via the command line:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

From then on, you can just update as normal.

I think I did it OK, following your instructions, but at the end of the update/install, there is this message ...

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Hi Roy,

that means something else is installing a package on your system at the same time. Are you running update manager or something of that sort?

not as far as I know ... it is like I said ... I am avoiding installing anything else, and only updates ... and I wasn't updating anything at that time

I would recommend rebooting and trying again.

I do realize that this one may not even be adobe flash ...
it does not identify itself when I rt click the area, to check properties ...
it acts like if it does not exist

Sorry about your continued troubles. It is indeed flash, so the error you reported before is indeed a problem. Try running the command again:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

Then give me the output of this again:

dpkg -l |grep flash

It should have worked before...
