Flash stopped working in 10.04

Asked by Dianne Reuby

Web pages with Flash content produce an error message - "you need to update your Flash player". I have Flash 10.1.82.76ubuntu0.10.04.2 on Ubuntu 10.04, and no problems until about a week ago.

I've tried Flash-Aid, which seems to run OK but I still have the problem. I've tried Firefox safe mode, with all extensions disabled, but still get the problem. I've tried two previous Linux kernels (2.6.32-23-generic-pae and 2.6.32-22-generic-pae) but that doesn't solve it.

Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic-pae
Gnome 2.30.2
Graphics card ATI Xpress 200 - basic but has worked with Flash OK

I have a laptop which has no problems - it's running 2.6.32-23-generic-pae as I haven't run the latest update yet, and has fewer Firefox extensions, but it does have a more powerful graphics card.

Why the pae kernels? Copy and paste this below into your terminal

sudo apt-get purge lightspark
sudo apt-get purge swfdec-mozilla
sudo apt-get purge mozilla-plugin-gnash
sudo apt-get purge adobe-flashplugin
sudo apt-get purge flashplugin-nonfree
sudo apt-get purge flashplugin-installer
rm -f /home/**/.mozilla/plugins/*flash*so
rm -rf /home/**/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/system32/Macromed/Flash
sudo rm -f /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/libflashplayer.so
sudo rm -f /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/libflashplayer.so

Don't know - is that not normal? I did a clean install of 10.04 in May, and this is the first time I've looked at GRUB2 as I only have Ubuntu now. I noticed that as I ran the above commands, it installed two kernels that were both pae (I've used apt-get autoremove to get rid of them).

flashplugin-nonfree installed successfully, but the problem remains.

It's OK now - all the plugins were disabled, so now I've enabled them it seems to be working again. Just can't work out when they became disabled - I'll have to watch for that in future. Thanks for curing it for me!
