64-bit acroread is old (from oneric) version in precise repos

Asked by jimav

In 64-bit Precise (12.04), acroread appears to be an old version. The i386 repos have 9.5.1-lprecise1 but the x86_64 repos have 9.4.7-1oneiric1 (in the *precise* repo!)

Or it at least seems that way.

Would someone please look at comments #35 .. #37 in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-filters/+bug/997728
and post a response with possible reasons why the reporter does not get the current version of acroread?

Thank you very much

You can install the 32bit deb in 64bit OS. The package system wil satisfy deps for you. This is what happens when you install skype.

cd $HOME

wget ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.1/enu/AdbeRdr9.5.1-1_i386linux_enu.deb

sudo dpkg -i ./AdbeRdr9.5.1-1_i386linux_enu.deb

sudo apt-get -f install

Should do it.... Is there a feature you specifically need in the Adobe reader?

Please read the above-referenced bug report, which is most likely a bug with Ubuntu's acroread, not cups.

I was asked to verify that the bug still exists using the latest version of acroread, but my system
gets an older version when using normal software update procedures.

P.S. Is there a specific reason the same version of acroread is not built on both platforms (i38g & x86_65) ?
