I am unable to shut down my desktop

I am a new user of ubuntu 11.10
I am unable to shutdown my computer. whenever i shutdown it simply log out.
Can any one help me resolve this?

If you run:

sudo shutdown -h now

Does it die?

Hi,

are you sure, that you press button "Shut down computer" in your menu bar? If not this will be problem. Anyway, you can still shut down your computer by running simple command in terminal which you can acess by typing CTRL + ALT + T. In terminal type: sudo shutdown -h now and your computer should shut down imediatly.
