CD-RW/DVD-ROM PLAYS AUDIO CDS BUT NOT DVDS

Hello Papanator,

thanks for your question. Could you please provide the content of the file /etc/fstab and the last lines of /var/log/syslog after inserting the DVD? Another hint: Writing in capital letters is interpreted as shouting and this might seem unfriendly to others. Please avoid this.

What application are you using to play the DVD's ?

I recommend VLC player.

can you try inserting the DVD again and paste the last 50 lines from /var/log/syslog into
http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/ and print the url so we can have a look. thanks

under 'removable drives and media preferences' and the tab labeled 'multimedia' the command line reads:

gxine -S dvd:/

the box is checked for automatic play when a video dvd disk is inserted

This is mysterious. There is no hint in the log that a disk is inserted at all. Maybe this has nothing to do with it, but I would give it a try as it is safe: Could you change your fstab as follows:

I made two changes compared to yours. I switched the filesystem setting of the CD/DVD drive to auto and I added the right mountpoint /dev/fd0 to your floppy disk. You could also try to switch the order from udf,iso9660 to iso9660,udf. Iam not sure if this has an impact because I doubt hal on your machine is working correctly but before reinstalling hal I would try this.

don't have permission to modify this file since i'm not the owner? i
can't change the permissions because it lists the owner as root. help:
i'm very new to all this and i don't want to mess anything up.

You have to edit the file with superuser rights. In a terminal, type sudo nano /etc/fstab to edit the file, for example. You can then make the modifications and save with Ctrl+O. Exit the editor with Ctrl+X.

ok - did all that and still not working. should i change it back to the
way it was?

tried my player in my windows os (win98se) not working in windows
either. that takes me back to my original suspicion that the problem
may be with the drive itself.

any further suggestions? i am prepared to replace the drive with an
upgraded one that burns dvd's. i think i can get one for about $70.

As it doesn't work in the other OS, this could be a hint that the drive has a defect but I don't know of any testing programs to verify this, sorry.
