I have not installed the ATI 3d driver. ATI was installed on the earlier Win

It means that there is an invalid line in the /etc/apt/
Can you post the content of this file here ? You can see and edit the file with this command in a terminal:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/

Hanusz Leszek, HI Sorry about delay in coming back to your note.
I have installed a GeForce 6200A AGP card and have reinstalled Ubuntu.
Desktop effects are now enabled and the 3D box effects box is ticked. However no 3D box of panes appear.
Have I to do a bit more to configure?

Hi,
To tweak desktop effects to your liking, you have to install a couple of extra control panels. Luckily, that's very easy to do. You can use the following command to install the control panels. Fire up a terminal window and enter this command (I suggest copy-pasting):
sudo apt-get install gnome-compiz-
Enter your password when prompted. When this is done, try running this command:
gnome-compiz-
You should also be able to find it from the "Preferences" menu, just look for "Desktop Effects" or anything with the word "Compiz" in it (same place where you can add/remove users, set up the clock, basically where all the control panels are). This control panel should make things a lot easier to manage and tweak. Have fun! :)

Rouben, Your suggestion was brilliant. Thank you. I am having fun!
Also can you tell me how I can reduce the size of the Cube on the Desktop, that revolves at request.
At the moment the whole Desktop revolves.

I'm glad you're enjoying yourself! :) But I see you want more eyecandy, and I can't say that I blame you... There's a new project called Compiz Fusion, which is going to be available in the next version of Ubuntu (due in October/November). This new version is guaranteed to keep you occupied for hours, and is a lot more tweakable than what you have at this point. It's also important to point out that it's very much BETA software, which means it may crash on you randomly, and that it's probably full of bugs!
However, if you can't wait that long and just must have it... here's a way to install it on Ubuntu Feisty (7.04):

Please note that I haven't tried it myself, but I did watch that YouTube video, and I must admit, it's very tempting! Have fun! :)
