can ubuntu 9.1 run a logitech ex100 cordless desktop

Asked by Ian Brownlie

Hi all, I've just received a "Logitech EX100 cordless desktop" for Christmas, The problem is the software won't load, as usual it's only for windows (ugh!!!) Does anybody have any idea if I can get it working. Is there any ubuntu software available to use it. The gift is from my daughter and I don't want to have to tell her it's no good. Please, if anyone can help it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ian

Yes, according to the Ubuntu Hardware Support list, this device should work fine. Just plug it in and give it a go.

Hello Uber. Nope! I can't install the software, all I get is an error message. When I try just running it, it doesn't do anything. I have tried the software and keyboard on windows xp and windows 7 (my grandson's) computers and it works perfectly. So, I don't know where I go from here. Thanks for replying, Ian

Ian, what software are you trying to install?

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply. The software which came with the desktop package is " SetPoint 4.60a ". The odd thing is the mouse works happily without the software, but not the keyboard.
Any advice and/or assistance would be a big help.
                   Thanks again, Ian

It is probably for Windows... I have never had to install software to use a keyboard/mouse in linux. Can you verify that the software is for Ubuntu (or linux)?

Yes, the software was originally intended for windows, but when my daughter bought it she was assured it would run on all platforms. I have tried 'wine' but no go. I think it was a case of tell 'em anything to make a sale. I think I'm going to have to fess up and tell her, then try to return it. Thanks anyway Chris. Ian

You should not need the software to make it run on Ubuntu. You may
have to setup a few of the keys. My logitech desktop works fine with
no software.

Hi Chris, great news, problem solved. I had an expert look at it and it turned out to be a loose connection in the keyboard. Nothing more than that. Now everything works great with 'NO' software. I just plug it in and it works. Thanks for your help.
