ubuntu 7.04 screen flickers

Asked by billgateslockdown

just installed ubuntu 7.04 and checking it out . seems like a nice os . only probhlem is , the screen seems to flicker like a subliminal message being displayed for a sec . it does this periodically and does it more as general use occurs . then slows down when i am not doing anything . my specs are gateway pc ( GT5032 ), 250 GB HD , 1024MB RAM , 64X2 DUAL CORE AMD 4200+, 2.2GHZ Processor,2000MHZ FSB 21 Inch high def monitor gateway. nvidia 6100 .now i dont know if there is anything else i need to post to diagnose this glitch , but please let me know with directions as iam new to linux i dont wanna mess up my new toy . oh also
i installed this linux version along side with windows xp media center . i wanted to see how linux works and hopefully do away with winxp altogether . so is this a screen resolution Vs. refresh rate . or operating systems clashing ? what do i need to do ?
thanx in advance for your help converting my O.S religion . -jason

Hi
this maybe help you
open a terminal and run : sudo dpkg-reconfigure xorg-xserver
then follow the questions and choose another refresh rate.

well when i did that i i got this : Package `xorg-xserver' is not installed and no info is available.
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: xorg-xserver is not installed

i dont know my way around linux at all. so i hope you meant go to applications , accessories , terminal .

The correct command is:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Do you know the correct refresh rates for your monitor?
They should be provided with the documentation that was included in the monitor's box.
If you don't have this info, try googling for your monitor's model.

my monitor is a gateway FPD2185W . the book shows pixel resolution at 1680x1050 60hz and the maximum refreh rate at 75hz

Yes, have you tried with the command I gave you?
You also need to specify the horizontal scanning frequency (with the data you gave me it should be around 60KHz for the 1680x1050 mode).

i tried the command you gave me . but i dont know what i am supposed to do because i am new to linux . consider me a dummy with it . i need explicit instructions . and as far as horizontal scanning how do i go about it . i would prefer 1280x 1020 .

Just answer all the questions, they are pretty simple.
You should have all the data available now:

resolution = 1280x1020
vertical refresh = 75 Hz (max)
horizontal scanning rate = 70 KHz (max, perhaps more, try or find the exact value from docs)
video card driver = nv (or nvidia if you want the proprietary drivers)

If you need help with a specific question come back here.
