Can you make .deb binary files to run in Darwin operating system? (XNU kernel)

Asked by M. Kim

I just wanted to test Darwin operating system with Feisty (of course, with source code and recompiling it), but I don't know if the linux(-only) softwares can work (such as Linux version of Firefox, GIMP, Apache and so on.) . Also can .deb file run in XNU kernel? (That's why I'm asking to here, since I want to use ubuntu binary files still.. )
I know that XNU kernel follows single UNIX specification, but not sure of running Linux softwares.
Thanks,

Thanks for your question.

You can't just exchange the linux kernel against XNU without having to recompile most of the software.

Just have a look at GNU Darwin (http://www.gnu-darwin.org/) a XNU/Darwin distribution. Just run it in a virtual machine (VMWare, XEN, etc. pp) until you gained enough knowledge to know what you're trying to do :-). Also have a look at Nexenta (http://www.gnusolaris.org), which did exactly the same for the OpenSolaris kernel.

Please notice that XNU is licensed under the APSL 2.0, which is not compatible to the GPL. So you'll maybe run into serious trouble redistributing your work as a whole (I'm not a lawyer, so ask someone else regarding the legal issues :->).

Can you help with this problem?
