cant even boot up

  Have you tried removing ubuntu in add and remove then reinstalling ?

I could not get that far, so I tried installing without running parallel with windows, that works fine; just can't use some programs now as they will not run on gnulinux, that is why i wanted to save windows. so the problem is that gnulinux will not install alongside windows xp home edition.

Hello John,

Could you be a bit more specific about the grub error:
- Does it return an error code? (which number)
- When do you get this error? (upon starting windows or ubuntu?)

If you can start ubuntu, could you start a console and post the output of these commands:

$ df -Thl (in which the last option is a small "L"; this shows partition setup)
$ cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg | grep menuentry (this shows the entries in GRUB)

John, is it really solved or is it marked 'solved' by mistake? (as I didn't actually give an answer, merely asking for information?)

the only way that i could get my computer to do anything was to lauch
ubuntu from the disc and then install it erasing windows, it would not
install parallel, and i could not do anything as the "grub" would not
load, so i could not operate the computer at all. Now i am using
gnulinux as my operating system and have no way to operate some
programs that I needed, but will only work on windows. I like ubuntu,
but needed it to run parallel and give the the use of windows for some
very special programs that I had, that are now worthless. so my
question no longer mattered, so i marked it solved so y'all would not
worry about this old man, and his problem.

OK, we'll regard this one as closed. However, you might want to open another support question to ask around if people know an alternative for your applications (unless they are custom built).
You might even be able to run some Windows applications under Wine. Please search the AppDatabase on http://www.winehq.org
