Can't use alternate window manager on log in

Asked by DanielGoldin

After moving from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10, I no longer get a complete menu of WMs under the session menu. The only offerings are gnome, safe-gnome and xterm. Under 9.04 I was able to boot from my .xinitrc/.xsession script, which loaded xmonad. What do I need to do to restore these previous WM options options?

It's been reported in Bug #398300 who refers to a gnome bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=589544 . To make gnome read your .xsession add this:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Xsession
Comment=This runs ~/.xsession
Exec=/etc/X11/Xsession

To /usr/share/Xsessions. Hope this helps.
