how to come back from root to desktop on ubuntu 9.10

I recently installed ubuntu 9.10 on my computer. The Accesorries -> terminal not working , it just give me a white screen . How i access terminal . When i use ctrl+alt f2 for access terminal than i successfully come to the prompt but how to back on gnome desktop i dont know . Previously i use exit command for that.

Ctrl + Alt + F7 returns you to the GUI display. Actually, I think it's just Ctrl + F7 or Alt + F7, but pressing all three at once works.

Here how to solve it. I had the same issue 2 days ago

Administration-->Preferences-->Appearances-->Visual Effects
change visual effects settings to "none" and the issue will be solved
