update ubuntu on an USB installation

Hey all!

I am new with Ubuntu. I have made a 9.10 USB installation with http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
If I make any changes in files, or place any files on the desktop, I loose them after a reboot.
I can not update my device drivers, because they are lots after reboot.

Is it possible to allow the system to change the installed files?

Ubuntu provides the "USB Startup Disk Creator" tool to create a USB flash drive "LiveCD" bootable image from the Ubuntu ISO images that can be downloaded from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/. This allows one to have some form of persistent storage of files in your /home directory (and hence on your desktop). I recommend trying this first.

An alternative is to install your system onto a USB key as if it was your hard-disk - this puts the full installation on the USB key rather than using a LiveCD image. This allows one to modify the total system - add new kernels, drivers, etc permanently. This however requires some effort, and is documented here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/InstallonUSBkey
