Black Desktop - Ubuntu 9.10

On an upgrade from 9.04 I have had no problem with desktop, but with a fresh install on same pc the desktop is blank, not only does it not display colour or themes but no icons either. The icons are seen when browsing desktop with nautilus. Interestingly when logging off the desktop picture flashes on the screen briefly. Is this similar for you?

You can change your desktop background by right clicking on the desktop and choosing change background maybe the image file is corrupt or not a recognised image format or no longer exists (some artwork was removed)
if you navigate in nautilus to the desktop are the file shortcuts still there if not maybe the module(shortcut) is not supported

My desktop is black and i can't see the icons from the desktop. When i browse folders or do other things everything is displayed properly. When i log off the desktop picture flash and then it log off.

icons are off in menus by default this can be adjusted in system> preferences> appearance> interface>>> show icons checkbox

Ok.. I'll try to do that but what can I do with the black screen?

Note: I see some lines at the top of the screen.

I don't have my hardware drivers installed. My drivers are just for Windows.

Yes, I can use image viewer.

I also have the same problem, however it only affects the user used to install the update; all the others and new ones are unaffected.

I have exactly the same problem as Cosmin. Desktop is black with no icons displayed, but when I go to Places>Desktop the icons are there and function properly (eg I can load Radio Paradise into the VLC player - except that I have no sound. On the other hand, the song titles change properly, which they never did in 9.04). When I logoff, the background I chose for the desktop displays momentarily before the computer shuts down.
