update from 9.04 to 9.10 backup needed?

Asked by Horst Seeger

I want to update from 9.04 to 9.10. What do I have to backup in my file system not to be destroyed in the update? e.g. I'm making a backup of my home directory inclusive hidden directories to reintegrate it afterwards. But it has about 27 GB. Does it make sense? Horst

My question was because I have downloaded the new release and I thought I have to update by installing this. Now I found another way: also the update manager gives the opportunity to upgrade to 9.10. I see, it needs many hours but maybe it is the more secure way for my other installations.

User data is not touched during the upgrade. Only applications. I suggest you backup xorg.conf resolv.conf and smb.conf (if you use samba)

If your data is important you should have an effective backup inplace already. No backup == Data is disposable

The amount of home data will depend on how much crap you keep in your docs (videos, music, images, whatever) so there is no yard stick here. Some users will have masses of data, some will have very little.
