Ubuntu streaming problems

Asked by wmlooi

Hi,

I'm a new user for Ubuntu 7.04 and I really like it. I encounter movie streaming problem for Mplayer, Realplayer & Quicktime.

Mplayer : Everytime I open a movie an error pop up and I have to close it but the movie still can be play. What's wrong?
"Error : Could not open required DirectShow codec wmvdmod.dll"
**Default player is Mplayer

Realplayer : I cannot open a movie from any websites. It's only pop an error and that's all. But, the same movie/website can be open using windows/internet explorer. I thought it may be the setting problem buit I'm not sure. Kindly pls help.
"Error : Connection to server could not be established. You may be experiencing network problems. (rtsp://xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/xxx.rm?actcode=178)"
**Default player is Realplayer

Quicktime : When stream the movie it will hang. Nothing will happen.
**Default player is Mplayer

Appreciate your help.
Thanks.

Regards,
WM Looi

Hi Looi,

I think you have problem with codecs. Please try to install codecs plugin into your system. You can use "Add/Remvoe Applications" to install them. Follow are some of them: GStreamer extra plugins; GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin; GStreamer plugins for aac, xvid, mpeg2, faad; GStreamer plugins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepack; Xine extra plugins;

If still have problem, try to use VLC, an one-for-all multimedia player that I think the best player I've used. You can find its features at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html.

Hope this help.

Hung Vo

Hi Viet Hung,

Thanks for the info. After installed all the GStreamer plugins, I'm able to open/play the Mplayer & Quicktime movies.
But, the real movie still can't be play even though using VLC. Same error as before. Kindly pls help.
Thanks.

Hello,

Did you install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package ?

You can also install the w32codecs package from the Medibuntu repository:
