I'm not connected to my wireless connection but doesn't do anything

Asked by banwich11

I just installed Ubuntu and now I'm just trying to get everything figured out. It says that I am connected to my homes wireless router, but when I open firefox and try to go to a website like google, nothing loads. At this point it still says that I'm connected and even though I am sitting right next to the Belkin router I have 55% connection and it varies as the wireless icon in Ubuntu has 3 bars filled, then 2 then 4 then 2 etc. Help!

Maybe for your model it is different, but on my wife's laptop (with an Atheros AR5003EG) I had to disable the ath_pci module and use ndiswrapper.
Apparently there are some compatibility issues between the restricted ath_hal module and hal.
To start debugging, can you open a terminal and paste here the output of these commands:

ifconfig
iwconfig
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
ping 192.168.1.100
ping 192.168.1.1
ping 82.211.81.211

My previous installations of UBUNTU all had similar problems with the WIRELESS CONNECTION. On first installation they worked fine after the codes were put in. After updates were installed, it seems the information on all the connections disappears, as though a virus had destroyed them. Even if I re-registered the connection WAP codes and OPTUS SSID they MIGHT work for a while, and then the bug sets in, and no matter what you try, it seems memory of those settings disappears. I am using a NETGEAR Wireless USB dongle WG111v2. However, it works good on the WIN-XP system (I have 2 systems option) - so when it disappears I have to use WinXP to get on the net. I worry about downloading the updates, as they seem to be faulty, or create faults like memory of saved data. A Wireless Wizard like Windows would be great, where any data to be saved has a "SAVE" button, and it does exactly THAT. (Maybe you can call it "Wireless Connection Magician" or something.) It seems the current program is not stable enough. Ex-Windows users like me cannot understand the DOS language you use, so it needs a user-friendly program system.

I gave up with trying wireless in UBUNTU, so either I use WinXP on the other half of my HDD, or use cable LAN. My wireless stuffed up every time the new updates were included from a fresh re-install of HH.
