How to install Ubuntu on HP Mini via thumb (USB)?

Asked by Nunya

I bought an HP Mini 1000 late last year because it was supposed to be running Ubuntu Linux. It came with a goofy
front (desktop) that is unfamiliar and cumbersome. It acts nothing like Ubuntu. I have installed Ubuntu on several PC
from CD, but have never done it via thumb. I would like some simple instructions. Also , since the netbook is running
Ubuntu already; I anticipate all the drivers will be ok. Please advise, and/or like me to the instructions. Thanks !

Nunya,

Here is the community documentation on how to create a bootable usb installation drive. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

At oscon 2009 an Attendee won an HP mini 1000 with the MI Edition running on it. I helped him to install Jaunty 9.04 at his request. We created a usb thumb installation drive using the USB Startup DIsk Creator locate in Jaunty: System --> Administration --> USB Startup Disk Creator. The documentation is spot-on. Once you are done creating the drive you will need to insert it into a usb port then power up the Mini. You can then either enter the bios and change the boot order, or you can try and find the right key to hit to go into the boot menu (the p.o.s.t. screen usually displays the correct key options for both setup and boot selection) Once it boots you should begin feeling familiar!

I can't find specifics about the HP Mini 1000, but I found this. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/Netbooks#HP%20Mini%20110%20/%20Compaq%20Mini%20100c

Best of luck to you!

I had to use a program called unetbootin to get the os on a thumb drive.

Can you help with this problem?
