Transferring Mac files to Ubuntu

Asked by Eli Katz

I am contemplating moving over to Ubuntu, I have not done so yet, and might not, unless this problem is solvable. The problem is, I have about 200 Gb of files, MP3s, MOVs, PDFs, etc. on an external hard drive, but my experience with trying to move files from the hard drive to a PC has been unsuccessful, mostly because it (the hard drive) was not recognized by the other computer. Would Ubuntu be able to read the files on the drive, or would I need to move the files around, and then reconfigure it to be readable by a PC?
Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided,
Eli Katz.

Mac uses the file system HFS+ and Linux is able to recognize this type of file system.
Here is a link that will help you to setup your external hard drive :

Mac OS X can also read to Linux file system by using a special driver but it's not provided by Apple (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsx/).

This driver is able to read to ext2 and ext3 file systems which are the more common file systems in Linux. Ext3 partitions can be mount as ext2 because it's backward compatible.

So, will the external hard drive be recognized by ubuntu?
