Trple boot query

Asked by bluey

Hello,

I am a Linux fan but wish to install Windows 7 RC on my machine to try it out. I already have a dual boot setup with Windows XP and Ubuntu on separate partitions. I believe if I install Windows 7 via XP, the Boot menu will show "Windows 7" and XP will be shown as "Older Operating Systems".

I don't want to mess up my grub menu so my question is - Can I install Windows 7 with Ubuntu and XP already installed, or do I have to remove Ubuntu first and then reinstall it after installing Windows 7?

Thanks,
Bluey.

No, there shouldn't be a problem with installing Win 7 at this point. However, I believe that the Windows 7 install will overwrite your MBR. To use Grub, you can use a liveCD to have Grub rewrite your MBR to include all 3 OS's. To get a little headstart on this, you may want to read up here:

You *may* also come across issues with Windows not wanting to boot if it's not on the first partition of your first harddrive. I'm not positive about this, though, so it would have to be something you can look into if you come across this issue.
