onscreen download monitor

Asked by dmws

some of us have volume limits on download volumes - looking for simple numeric display of downloaded MBs (in my case on ppp0) since last reset or specific day of the month. other methods such as vnstat or gnomes system monitor are not so convienient or give too much info such as realtime graphs - be nice to have something docked into the xfce4 provided panels such as the disk space module. thanks , im sure many others are punished financially or with reduced speed when they go over their monthly limits hence would seem to be a desirable kit for most people on the internet.

How about a desktop widget of some sorts? There are tons of packages to choose from... a few come to mind:

Superkaramba
gKrellm (you may like this one more, because it's very light)

Speaking of gKrellm, you may also be interested in this discussion, given that you mentioned XFCE in your question: http://linux.derkeiler.com/Newsgroups/alt.os.linux/2008-11/msg00153.html

System Monitor is rubbish for this unless you leave your machine on 24/7 all month and never close System Monitor down. Although the output is quite nice having both graphical display and numbers it only counts from the moment it was last started and i often go around just closing everything down to get back to an uncluttered desktop with just things i need, dohhh. ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Ps Rouben, thanks for suggestions i am just about to try them out :)

Is this something that could be added to a conky script?

Oooo, links like that are so annoying. From it i found someone ranting about how bad certain things are (because they are not set-up the Windows way) when it's really easy to change those things to the way he/she does want them. And the
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows
would help them enormously too but i can't seem to post into there. Thanks tho :)

gKrellm wanted 2Mb which seems quite a lot but isn't too bad. I prefer the look of conky for most of this info and couldn't quite work out how to keep a running total of how much download & upload i had made. Aaargh i guess i will rtfm, or at least the settings list, in a bit ;)

I hope this is helping dmws too but thanks for this Rouben
Regards to all from
Tom :)
