Hi Samarth,

Are you sure you wish to format? You can upgrade. If you want to upgrade:

1) Main menu: System-Administration-Software Sources
2) Click Updates tab
3) Change show new distribution releases to Normal releases
4) Close
5) main menu: System-Administration-Update Manager
6) Click the upgrade button on the top right.

You will have to go through 8.10 first

After 8.10 is installed update manager should provide 9.04 as an update option.

If you are sure you want to format, lossing anything on that drive. Put the install disk in, when asked about partitions select manual. Click your old Ubuntu 8.04 root write and mark it to format. This is from the top of my head for the installation. If you need more information about an install process please ask and I'll walk through the screen.

Regards,
Paul.

There is no need to format. Just install 9.04 into the same space as 8.04 as you did before. The installation will take care of things.

There's a few good ways to do this upgrade but it's worth making sure you have backed up any essential data (or just copy the entire /home folder) onto either external hard-drive (temporarily) or onto dvds (permanent).

If you have the 9.04 cd can you boot into it as a LiveCd session? Just boot up from the Cd to the menu with "Try Ubuntu without changes to this machine", if you don't get that menu then this guide might help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD
Choosing the "Try Ubuntu ... " option should get you to a working desktop which we call a "LiveCd session", if it works ;) The LiveCd has firefox on the top taskbar and should have worked out your internet connection so having got a LiveCd session working you should be able to surf around and check that Ubuntu is going to work easily on the machine. I you let us know when you get this working then we can have a look at how you have arranged your hard-drives partitions and then possibly suggest a way of installing Ubuntu that improves on your current set-up easily

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
