Source for security is local and not the main security source

Asked by Shahar Or

Dear friends,

When I used Debian, I remember that by default the security apt source was always the main security server and not a mirror.

Now after receiving a USN about OpenSSL and an refresh in the update-manager I didn't see the upgrade available so I've looked around and saw that in my Ubuntu the source for the security packages is on the same mirror as the one I've selected in software-properties-gtk.

Is this the default behavior? Why is this, please? Is there a discussion about this which explains the reason behind it, please?

Many blessings.

From what I understand, while your sources.list has an entry for the security packages from the local mirror, it should also source

security.ubuntu.com

which doesn't get changed even when you change your mirrors. I just changed mirrors back and forth a few times and this was the case. If you don't have the security.ubuntu.com line, try the following:

1) Open System->Administration->Software Sources
2) Go to the updates tab
3) Uncheck important security updates
4) Close the Software Sources utility, reloading the sources.list when prompted.
5) Go back to the Software Sources utility
6) Recheck the important security updates box
7) Reload the list again.

Read this for more information:

You should now see the security.ubuntu.com line in your sources and this shouldn't change even when you change your mirror.

Dear Steven,

This indeed put security.ubuntu.com in there.

I wonder why it wasn't there to begin with! Could it be because I upgraded this system to jaunty when jaunty was RC?
