Did you MD5 check the ISO you downloaded? Did you verify the CD once initially booted to?

If you are wanting to upgrade your system using a CD the desktop CD will not work, you can ONLY upgrade an installed system using the alternative CD. The desktop CD will only allow a fresh install.

Here is a guide as to how:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

The hashes are here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

If the hashes do not match you will need to redownload the file and recheck. You should always check the file using the hash to make sure what you have downloaded is correct and complete and has not gotten garbaged in transit from the canonical servers to your PC.

If it passes MD5 check then try disabling hardware in the BIOS (like LAN and sound amongst others) and try again. If this doesn't work then you can try some boot options to disable fancy kernel modules like apic, dma, apci amongst others. A guide for this is here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

I don't know about MD5-I installed Ubuntu 8.10 through a live cd. Now if I want to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 through once again from Live CD, how to ?As told earlier, the system won't boot from cd! I am not professional.

It doesnt matter abot being professional.

i gave you the links and guides as to how to check the ISO. The CD has a self checker on the first screen you see after you select your language

The internet is not a particularly reliable place. You are downloading and viweing data which has travelled the globe over any number of connectivity devices to reach you.If one has a fault then the data you download can get damaged. There are protools like TCP and torrents to chek and verify the packets and request any that fail CRC checks etc. If some get through this test by sheer fluke, the data you finally get will be useless as the data making up the file has become damaged. MD5 checking lets you create a hash based on mathematical formulae actioned on the data. You can then compare this hash to the hash on the server which MUST match. If they do not, the download has become corrupted and the data must be entirely redownloaded. If you do not check the ISO then you will get issues and if the data is bad, the CD you burn will automatically be bad. This is ESSENTIAL to OS installs as it is the most critical software part of your entire system.

Please check your ISO, and pleas tell 2 forends of MD5 checking. and tell them to tell 2 friends. Thanks

If none of the live CDs are working, you should consider checking your CD drive.
