Complete Linux newbie trying to install Skype for Intrepid.

Asked by d

Here is my set up:
    Inspiron 1545, Intel Pentium Dual Core T4200, 2.0GHz, 800Mhz, 1M L2 Cache
        Jet Black
 2GB, DDR2, 800MHz 2 Dimm
Bright, Glossy, widescreen 15.6 inch display (1366x768)
        Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
 160G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Ubuntu Notebooks Edition 8.10 w/ Multimedia Playback
Integrated Gigabit (10/100/1000) Network Card forXPS 1340
 8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
 Integrated High Definition Audio 2.0
Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini Card
 Integrated 1.3M Pixel Webcam
 9-cell Primary Battery

I bought the webcam for one purpose - to skype.

When I try to install skype, It doesn't want to do it because the file is unsatisfiable? But I can force it to extract and then it opens into the file browser and I have no idea what to do with tit then. I see a lot of people saying to use something by medibuntu to help but those files do the same thing!

Please - someone walk me through installing skype on my machine. I am begging you.

*sigh* there, I already feel better. Thanks.

Hi

You don't mention how you tried to install skype, but this should do it for you.

Go to System->Administration->Software Sources. Click on the Third Party Software tab, and make sure that the Medibuntu repository is checked. You can then close the dialog box.

Open a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), and type these commands. The first one should ask you for your password, type it in and press enter even though you won't see anything while typing, it is ok.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install skype

This should set skype up for you.

Good luck

Thank you for that Robert.

I don't see a a Medibuntu choice in software sources. Can you type out what I should add there?

Ooh, I feel like this is close.

Ok, I looked around the net a little for the answer to the question I just asked you, Robert.

I found:

deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ intrepid free non-free

Is that correct?

When I enter that I get --

GPG error: http://packages.medibuntu.org intrepid Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY: 2 EBC26B60C5A2783

Ok. to add the medibuntu key do this in a terminal

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update

You may be asked to accept this package even though it cannot be authenticated. This is normal; typing "Yes" means you trust Medibuntu.

then do the two commands given earlier.

After that long command I still got the same error as before about the public key and then this:

"Couldn't find package medibuntu-keyring"

I tried to install skype anyway and it says:

"package skype has no installation candidate"

I appreciate the advice though.

It's getting late where I am, if you can think of more possible solutions, I will take them and will check on this tomorrow.

Nite.

Okay, problem resolved.

It's was a brand new computer but needed 799 software updates! One or more of those fixed the problem. I was able to go to the skype website and just download the software after all of the updates.

Go figure!!

Thanks to Robert for helping me.

I am now a happy Linux user.
