OK, go to preferences > sound

set everything in the dropdown boxes to pulseaudio (including capture)

go to add / remove programs and install pulseaudio device chooser

now go to applications >sound and video > pulseaudio device chooser

a new icon on the taskbar should appear

click on it and select volume control

select the input devices tab and check that there is a source in there (the microphone), check also that it is not muted, if it is, then unmute it

try the microphone now (sound recorder recommended)

tell us if that worked
