Does the disc label matter on a DVD?

Asked by Derek White

I was building a video DVD with DeVeDe on a Vista machine, and the process failed while creating the ISO, leaving me with a DVD disc structure.

In order to burn the structure, I have to give the disc a label. Is there a standard/default label that must be used for the DVD to be compatible with home DVD players? [e.g. audio cd's are usually "Audio Disc"].

I searched everywhere for this (and mostly found cd/dvd label makers - arghh). Even doom9's website skipped right over the disc label and started deeper at the AUDIO_TS/VIDEO_TS folders.

So, my question: Does the disc label matter when burning a DVD structure to disc? Or, can I label it anything I want and have it still be compatible with even the cheapest of home DVD players? Is there an ISO standard that regulates this?

It does not matter what label you use for your DVD. The burning application (e.g. Brasero) will regulate the length of the label to fit the required standard.

I will be using the Vista machine for the burning process, as I do not have the 2 computers networked and have no USB stick big enough for the DVD structure to fit on.

I will make the disc label short enough to avoid any standards fudging. Thank you for your answer Benjamin.
