fix screen size

Asked by Neil

Hi out there
I have a small problem (well I hope it is) My desktop is wider that the screen. A bit hard to describe but here goes.
OK looking at the screen, the left side is OK the "show desktop icon" is in the left corner where it should be, but the other side goes past the screen. I can see the clock but it cuts off just past clock I can just see the spacer after the PM on the clock. so the shut icon and all under it is not there.
Its not the monitor if I move the display to the left it makes not difference just black there (on right side). Its not the resolution, I have tried that just make screen bigger or smaller ( as it does) but the right side is missing.
Can someone please help me to make my desktop fit my screen.
Neil

What's the spec of your graphic card? Do you have Intel, ATI or Nvidia and which model?
Do you use a proprietary driver on your system?

why do you use envyng to install your drivers? ubuntu has build in support for proprietary drivers.
Menu: System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers

Which version of Ubuntu do you use?
On Intrepid you are able to install the newer version 177 with the "Hardware Driver" programm
On Jaunty there is version 180 available

Again as a TEMPORARY solution:
Right-click on the upper panel, choose Properties and unmark Expand. This should remove all unoccupied space in the panel, shrink it and hopefully show you the On/Of button.

Thanks again

"... why is it that the simplest things get over looked?"
It's an interesting psychological phenomenon.
I think because we are afraid of the more complex problems of the issue and think directly of them, thus missing the simpler or initial problems.
Our institute had a gift - a not functioning machine bought for 1,5 million dollars. Nobody had success making it ever work, even the guarantee stuff that came from the USA. So that institute gave up and gifted the machine to us.
All that was "broken" was a twisted pin of a simple chip. But the chief of our electronics began from the simplest thing - checking each chip by pulling and revising it. It took to him to fix the problem 5-10 minutes...
